- Rowntree’s Smarties were originally produced in 1882, but back then they were simply known as Chocolate Beans. The Smarties name was first used in 1937.
- The Scottish boiled sweet, Soor Plooms (sour plums) can be traced back as far as the 14th century.
- M&Ms were released in the US in 1941 but didn’t make it to the UK until 1980.
- Not all ‘E’ numbers are bad news. E330 refers to Citric Acid which is used to add a sour taste to some sweets. Citric Acid also finds it’s way into soft drinks, bath bombs/salts and some cleaning products.
- Chewits made an appearance in 1965 with less than a handful of different flavours.

- Jelly Babies were first produced by Bassett in 1918 but were originally called Peace Babies to celebrate the end of the First World War.
- Fry’s Turkish Delight was first produced in 1914
- Rowntree’s Polo mint were first produced in 1948.
- Jelly Tots were first produced in 1967
- Rowntree’s were originally established in 1862, founded by Henry Issac Rowntree. The company merged with Mackintosh in 1969 to become Rowntree Mackintosh. Nestle purchased Rowntree Mackintosh in 1988.
- Cadbury’s (finger of) Fudge was first produced in 1948
- An average of one hundred and fifty Polos are consumed every second
- After Eight Thin Mints were first produced in 1962 by Rowntree & Company Ltd. From 1988, they have been produced by Nestle. One billion Afters Eights are produced each year. The mint fondant apparently requires three months to mature.
- Caramac was first produced by Mackintosh (Caramel Mackintosh) in 1959. It is now produced by Nestle.
- Rowntree’s Jelly Tots were launched in 1967
- Chocolate Easter Eggs were first produced by Fry’s in 1873
